Tiny House: A Converted School Bus
Building your tiny home from a school bus can be a very rewarding experience. When your project is completed, you will be aware of every nook-and-cranny, so repairs are easier and become second nature, if you’re a do-it-yourselfer ( DIY’er ).
Here is a really cool school bus conversion into a very compact yet functional family home.
Before You Begin Your School Bus Conversion, know what you are getting into.
Here are a few considerations prior to making a decision to buy and start your conversion:
- Choose wisely between a school bus platform and a highway coach platform. They both have pros and cons. One has comfort in mind and the other was built with simplicity but rugged. If you are going to have a lot of construction weight on your platform, consider a school bus in good condition.
- Buy the best-maintained bus you can find within your budget. Also buy a bus that was mass-produced, as parts and replacement glass will be much easier to find.
- Maintenance records are from previous owners is critical. The more you know about the bus’s history the better.
- Take time to plan the layout carefully. Do your homework. See what others have done. Use Google and youtube to help you see what options are possible. Contact the owners of such buses and ask questions.
- Take the time to do the highest quality of workmanship possible. In the long-run quality means less will break down in the future. Your RV bus conversion will be a sizable investment that, at some point in time, will be sold. The higher the quality of investment, the better the return.
- Fuel is going to be expensive in an RV bus if you use it to drive here and there; however, if you are using the bus as temporary shelter then moving the bus will be a non-issue.
- Check your local ordinances to see if there are any restrictions to conducting a bus conversation in the location you choose.
- Buying the bus is only a small part of the expense for your project. make a plan and stick to your budget.
